Expecting a baby? You can refer yourself to NHS maternity services without needing to see your GP first

Posted on:

As part of the NHS’s digital-first approach and the 10-Year Health Plan, pregnant individuals in Hampshire and Isle of Wight can now refer themselves for NHS maternity care without needing to see a GP first.

  • Visit the NHS website.
  • Enter your postcode, town, or city to find nearby NHS Trusts offering maternity care.
  • Select your preferred NHS Trust, fill out the online referral form (or use the contact details if no form is available).
  • After submitting, the Trust will contact you to arrange your first midwife appointment, ideally before 10 weeks’ gestation
  • No GP appointment is necessary; your GP will be informed after your first midwife booking
  • If you have a long-term condition or are taking medication, you should still see your GP or specialist after submitting the referral to ensure joined-up care
  • Those who are new to the UK, digitally excluded, or where English is not their first language may prefer to start via their GP-this option remains available
  • If online referral isn’t suitable, you can contact your local NHS Trust by phone for support

✅ Why this matters

  • Quicker access to essential maternity care.
  • Reduced admin delays and better alignment with NHS’s digital access goals.
  • Greater choice and flexibility for expectant families across the region
